What is a Visual Sitemap?

A visual sitemap is a graphical representation of a website's structure and hierarchy, showing the pages and content of a site and how they are organized and linked together. It is typically created as a flowchart or diagram, with each page represented as a box or node, and the links between pages shown as lines or arrows. Visual sitemaps are often used in website planning and design to help stakeholders understand the site's structure and content, and to identify potential issues or areas for improvement. They can also be useful for search engine optimization (SEO) and user experience (UX) design, as they provide a clear overview of the site's organization and navigation.

You can tell Google Search that your website has a visual sitemap by adding a reference to the sitemap in the robots.txt file on your website. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Create a visual sitemap of your website.

  2. Save the sitemap image as an image file (e.g. PNG or JPG).

  3. Upload the sitemap image to your website and save it in a directory (e.g. /images/sitemap.png).

  4. Open your website's robots.txt file for editing.

  5. Add the following line to the robots.txt file, replacing the URL with the actual location of your sitemap image: Sitemap: https://www.example.com/images/sitemap.png

  6. Save the robots.txt file and upload it to your website.

By adding this reference to the sitemap in the robots.txt file, you are telling Google that the image file is a sitemap and should be treated as such. However, it's important to note that a visual sitemap is not the same as an XML sitemap, which is used to provide information about the structure and content of your website to search engines.
